Plans to Expand Program to Other Areas in Park System

Buffalo personal trainers Daniel I. Sheff, CPT (Cosmic Fitness, LLC) and
Giovanni Preziuso, CPT (Fierce Fitness), in cooperation with the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, are pleased to announce the extension of the Delaware Park Fitness Camp. After the initial five-week phase of this program, parks representatives, trainers and participants agreed it was worth extending through the fall and winter months. In addition they have added a permanent Saturday time slot. There also are preliminary plans to expand the camp to other Olmsted parks across the city in an attempt to help Buffalo and Western New York get in better shape, while utilizing these beautiful public green spaces.

Delaware Park Fitness Camp will continue to hold its classes through the end of 2009. With a flexible schedule you can attend as often as you like. Walk-ups are welcome.

Classes will be held:
Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays from 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM,
September 1, 2009 through November 19, 2009 (except for Saturday, September 5th), December 1 thru December 17, 2009

Cost per session:
20-session package -- $12 ($240 total)
10-session package -- $15 ($150 total)
5-session package -- $17 ($85 total)
Individual sessions or walk-ups are $20

Now is your chance to get outside, and get in better shape by participating in an hour long, thrice-a-week group exercise program under the direction and supervision of certified personal trainers.

Unlike other group sessions this fitness program puts you under the supervision of multiple certified trainers, intent on proper form, safety and the over-all health and fitness of participants.

Working with adults ages eighteen and over, the team works to progressively improve their strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Participants are asked to bring comfortable workout clothes and sneakers, heart rate monitor (optional, but recommended), sunscreen, towel & water bottle. Crime Alert #1: A home on Fairfield was broken into sometime between 8 a.m.and 4 p.m. on 6/24. Thieves entered the house through a locked sun porch by prying open locked windows. Easily portable things were taken. It is suspected that the home was cased/watched beforehand and entry was gained from a location hidden from neighbors’ view. It was also reported that a possible suspect was seen in neighborhood around 1 p.m. Description: B/M, 30’s, clean-shaven, short, wearing plaid short sleeve shirt. This information was reported to D-District Police.

Crime Alert #2: Another neighbor reports that three hanging pots were stolen from a porch on Crescent Ave. They were not secured in any way. Try to find some way to secure plants or make them too heavy to be easily lifted.

"After I watched the video over a few times, I noticed a particular vehicle circling the block. When the two thieves were almost out of left camera view, they went diagonally into the street. They were obviously going to a vehicle. The vehicle is medium blue with large chrome custom wheels."

Reported from a Parksider on Tuesday, 4/28 regarding an incident that occurred on Monday, 4/27:

"We live on the Robie block between Parkside and Woodward. A thief rummaged through one of our cars last night and stole a small bronze figurine from the center console. This took place around 9:00pm in the driveway behind our house. The car was unlocked, and I believe the thief was scared off when our dog noticed the commotion. Our CDs and loose change were not taken.

I just wanted to let you know to remind everyone to lock their doors. Clearly an opportunity criminal."

The following message is from a Parksider who has come into contact with a Parkside Prowler.

"One of the tenants on Fairfield, next door (I think it's 34 Fairfield), told a neighbor that a prowler was spotted under another tenant's girlfriend's car (parked in the driveway), and that a man fitting the same description was seen in the backyard by a teenaged resident on another occasion. The man is a light-skinned African American weighing about 220lbs and about 6ft tall. The tenant said that she did not have an age range for the individual. Please be cautious when going out to your cars."

Matt's Lake Effect Laundry Attempted Robbery

Buffalo police are releasing these store surveillance photos in connection with an attempted armed robbery last night at the Lake Effect Laundromat, 2311 Main St. The incident happened just before 8pm.

Police say the suspect, about 5'10, brown eyes, dark complexion, medium build, entered the store armed with a rifle.
The suspect demanded money but it appears he fled with no money taken.

The suspect was wearing an orange hoodie and a mask.

Crime Alert -- Car Break-ins along Russell Ave

On the morning of Feb 23, two Buffalo Policemen came to a Greenfield neighbor's door asking if we had seen any suspicious activity nearby. They said there is someone (probably a "Hispanic man from the west side") breaking into
cars between midnight and 4:00) and stealing from the contents. They asked questions about the neighborhood and said the car break-ins were now occurring on Russell and that the man targets an area to work in.

Delaware District Bulk Trash Pick-Up Announced!

The Delaware District's bulk trash pick-up will be the week of April 26th. Trash must be put out on Sunday, 4/26 and each property is limited to putting out trash that is 12 feet long, 3 feet high and 3 feet wide. Any trash that exceeds these specifications is subject to a fine. Solvents, paint and tires will not be accepted.

PCA Crime Alert: Break-in on Crescent Ave

A home on Crescent near Willowlawn was broken into on 2/10 at approximately 3:00 am while the family slept.

They took many items on the first floor including a paycheck, kids money from their back pack, television, etc... The police are investigating. Then on Thursday there was a break in attempt at the house next door at the same time, though the resident was woke by the movement of the window shades and scared the intruder away before he entered.

In both cases the burglars used a rear unlocked window and cut the screen as the entry points in the early am hours.

It is important for everyone to secure their windows, even on the second floor, and doors, perhaps keeping an outside light on. The first burglary was from the first floor, the second attempt was from the second floor.

FYI- After I looked at the Buffalo Rocket's blotter on 1/30, this would be the third burglary since Friday, 1/23. On 1/23 it is reported that a house on Greenfield, in the first block, was ransacked and on 1/26 a house in the 100 block of Crescent was burglarized (although this one says that there was no forced entry). On 1/27 a car in the 200 block of Crescent was broken into.

There was an attempt of a forced entry on Burbank terrace around 3:30 pm yesterday - a light skinned black man pulled up in a 95 white cutlas - lesabre - walked over to check out a next door neighbor's truck then came up to her front door and rang the bell - when she opened it her son stepped up also and the man claimed he was doing work on Agassiz - first he said on the metal trim then got angry and said - no, on the bushes and pushed the neighbor's son's arm. The neighbor thinks it's the same man that forced an entry on our street and that neighbor had him arrested - but evidently got out. They will report this to the poloce - the license plate was - they think DRM-5805.

Two Crime Alerts for Parkside Neighbors

Attempted Home Break-in on Summit Ave

At 3:10AM on Friday 11/14, a Summit Avenue neighbor, between Russell and Jewett, reports that his alarm tripped indicating the rear deck window. Here's a picture of the perpetrator caught by surveillance cameras. Young, black male, around 5' 8", 150lbs, wearing light pants, a hoodie and a light knit or skull cap.

Contents of Automobile Disturbed

In addition to Len's incident, another Summit Ave neighbor, just north of Russell, had her car rifled through on Thursday night, 11/13. Her car door must have been unlocked because there was no damage to her vehicle and nothing was stolen. All the items in the center console and glove box were spread all over. Whomever the perpetrator was must have just been looking for cash. Maybe just going by and pulling on car doors to see if ones were open?

Free Plants Needing a Home from PCA

The PCA has numerous plants in its yard that need a home. Many need to come in before the winter. Plant types are cannas, angel trumpet, mexican sunflower, pencil cactus, a few hostas and other assortments. If you are interested just stop by the PCA office anytime from 8:00-4:00 to pick put a plant. They also have numerous empty plant containers. The office is closed this coming Monday, October 13.

Please be advised that the City of Buffalo Police Department has approved and does now have a Burglary Detail for the Parkside neighborhood. An unmarked car is in the neighborhood from 4:00 pm -2:00 am daily. This is the third week for this detail, two arrests have been made so far.

Please continue to be diligent in regards to your homes and cars. Here are a few reminders:

Do not leave anything of value on your car seats or dashboards.
Lock your front door if you are in the yard.
Put stoppers on your windows so they will only open to a certain point. This goes for upstairs and downstairs windows.
Check the interior of your home from the outside. Move valuables out of sight.
Keep the blue garbage totes away from any windows.

Watch for a Crime Prevention training to be offered in October through the PCA

Crime Alert #1: Home Invasion
A Parkside Avenue neighbor, between Amherst and Linden, reports that their lower apartment was burglarized. They were not home at the time. The upstairs tenant heard a noise Saturday night, came down and checked the house and saw nothing. The next morning the lower tenants noticed that their printer was missing. They surveyed the house and noticed that the bedroom screen was damaged. This must have been the entry point. There is nothing else missing from the house. They must have been scared off by the upstairs tenant and her dog barking. This same neighbor had an attempted robbery in their garage in early August.

Crime Alert #2: Attempted Robbery in Garage
A Parkside neighbor was going to work at 6 am and noticed that both cars in an open garage had been tampered. The trunks were opened, all compartments in cars were opened, and cds scattered. There does not appear to be anything missing and seems that they were looking for money.

Crime Alert #3: Stolen Vehicle
A mini-van was stolen from the driveway of a homeowner on Florence near Main Street sometime late Monday night/early Tuesday morning.

Accident on Parkside Ave this past Sunday (8/31)

Check out these pictures from an accident on Parkside Sunday morning. Apparently, the less-than-bright driver must have been driving too fast. Neighbors along Parkside heard screeching noises from as far back as Florence Avenue. The driver got out of the car and ran off, so people weren't sure if the driver was injured. There was no blood in the car.

Was the car stolen? Was the driver drunk or on drugs? Maybe those cameras at Florence and Jewett can play a role is solving the mystery. (Seems like people have been driving really, really, really fast down it lately. Maybe just my impression.)

St. Mary's School for the Deaf Spaghetti Dinner

This message is from Paul Crowley, Director of Student Affairs at St. Mary's School for the Deaf about the upcoming spaghetti dinner. Marlon Outling is a young man with cerebral palsy, a vision impairment, and eating disorder. Marlon is confined to his wheelchair for most of the day. His mom, Earlene is deaf, and her brother Willis attended St. Mary's School for the Deaf many years ago. Ms. Outling is trying to help improve her son's quality of life by raising funds to purchase a special needs bike and a special swing. St. Mary's School for the Deaf recognizes the challenges of individuals like Marlon and wants to help any way we can. Can you join us in advertising and supporting this event?

Ms. Outling, with support from some of her family and church members will be having a spaghetti dinner at St. Mary's School for the Deaf on Saturday, August 16th from 4:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.

PCA Crime Alert: 7/1/2008

Just a note to everyone from the PCA

Several cars have been broken into on Crescent Avenue between Parkside and Colvin. This occurred over the course of several days this past weekend. Several had valuables (laptops, GPS equipment) within view, but a couple only had loose change in the vehicle. Unfortunately, at least 1 car was broken into while parked in a driveway right next to the front door. One of the cars was a convertible that had a hole cut into the top.

If you see anyone suspicious, please call police. Also, take all valuables out of your vehicles when you park them for the night.

The following is from the PCA: A neighbor reported that on the night of 6/22 two cars were broken into on Crescent near Florence. One car, with an alarm, had numerous CDs taken. The other car had tools taken.

A neighbor on Colvin wanted everyone to know that two weeks ago as he walked down Crescent near Colvin he was hit with paint balls being fired from an SUV traveling down Crescent.

June 28 - The Ride For Roswell's Extra Mile Club Peloton will pass briefly through our neighborhood. An estimated 200-300 Riders will cross into Parkside from Delaware Park at Jewett Pkwy, turn left onto Summit, right onto Amherst St, then left to Starin. The Peloton expects to be in the neighborhood at around 7:15 AM. If you are out and about on 6/28, you should try to see it -- it will be quite a sight to see. Milky Spore - The PCA now has milky spore available to purchase for $7.00/bag. Each bag covers 2,500 square feet. This is to control the Japanese Beetle infestation in parts of the neighborhood.

PCA Crime Alert: Two women fired at during Amherst Street home invasion

Two burglars fired at least three shots Tuesday night during a home invasion at an Amherst Street home in North Buffalo, police reported today.

The flying bullets missed two women who were in the house.

Northwest District Police said the two women were inside a house in the 1600 block of Amherst [near Starin Ave] at about 11:30 p.m. when two men kicked in the front door and entered the hallway.

One of the women went down the stairs, while her niece opened the door to the lower apartment.

That's when the men fired one shot at her niece in the lower apartment and then pointed their gun at the other woman, ordering her to get back upstairs, police said.

The burglars then fired two more shots. One pierced the front door, and the other apparently became lodged in the wall.

It does not appear that anything was stolen. No arrests have been made.

PCA Crime Alert: Suspicious Man around Fairfield and Vernon

On 5/21 around 4 PM there was a very suspicious man walking around Fairfield and Vernon. He was asking for fictitious people and looking up and down driveways. His description is as follows:

B/M, late 20's-early 30's,
About 6' tall
Slim build
Dressed all in black with an orange bandanna on his head
He was carrying some sort of backpack or satchel

911 was alerted.

PCA Crime Alert: Suspicious Activity on Greenfield Street

On May 16th, a Greenfield neighbor reported that someone attempted to enter their home near Amherst St. They did not succeed. The molding around the door on the side where the lock is was broken and coming away from the door frame. It was obvious that someone pried it off, and tried to slip into the lock possibly hoping there was not a dead-bolt, but there is.

On May 17th, another Greenfield Street neighbor near Amherst reported that her car had been broken into and a satellite radio receiver was stolen. Immediate neighbors did not have a problem.

PCA Crime Alert: Robbery at the Bible Society

The Bible Society of WNY, 2561 Main Street, was robbed on Wednesday, May 14, at 2:30 pm. The director said that she and another employee were in the office when a person came in asking for their money, pepper sprayed them, and took $114 from the cash register. He said that he did not want to shoot them so give him the money but they did not see a gun. Description is African American male, tall, thin, in his twenties, white tee shirt with blue denim shorts. He had been in their office the day before looking at bibles and asked to use their phone so he could call his church.

The police were called, they have fingerprinted and are looking at the phone records.

Both employees are fine and the store is open.

Just a heads up from PCA for those who were canvassed by the person that was going door to door from APEX Security. Apparently, he did work for the company. He was given a city ordinance summons by the police for operating without a vendor's license. He was also told not to go out again without a license.

If you don't already have one, please put a no solicitation sign in your window and call 911 should someone come to your door trying to sell you something you don't want.

PCA Crime Alert about Crescent Ave break-in (4/30/2008)

4/29/08: A house on Robie was broken into yesterday, 4/29, morning between the hours of 6:45am and 7:30am. The residents had already left for work. A neighbor believes he saw the perpetrator. He described him as a young chubby black male in cut off jean shorts that came to his knees and a summer type shirt. He took many small electronics, a DVD player, and a hunting knife from the home. He also went into the refrigerator and ate cake and took a gallon of juice with him. He entered the home by smashing the back
door window and then opening the door.

The police did come to the house and take a report.

4/30/08: A neighbor on the block of Crescent between Humboldt and Robie called 911 regarding a suspicious person lurking around a house on Crescent near Robie. Description: 20 something, male, approximately 5'9", long black hair, grey hoodie, cargo pants, Native American or Hispanic. The police were notified.

PLEASE REMEMBER: NOT TO HIRE ANYONE GOING DOOR-TO-DOOR LOOKING FOR ODD JOBS. If you see someone fitting these descriptions, or someone else acting suspicious, make a mental note of what the person is wearing, bike color (if applicable), distinguishing characteristics. Please call 911 immediately, tell them you live in the Parkside neighborhood and there have been two break ins in the last week.

Other suspicious behavior includes individuals walking in the street, not on the sidewalk, and looking into cars.If you see this call 911.

UPDATE: Water line re-lining postponed due to low pressure

Ruth dropped me a line to say that she just learned that they WILL NOT be doing the relining work this
construction year, so we won't see those disruptions at our end of Main.
Some residents have told the construction crew Parksiders are experiencing low water pressure. (Confirmed by Kevin and Ellen on Russell) The Water Authority is having "issues" with a major line and are working on it.

One of Ruth's friends told her we should see an improvement by Friday. If not, PCA will have to start putting pressure on the Water Authority.

We can't afford to lose what little water pressure we have - ha!

Minor Waterline Construction To Begin on Main Street

This heads-up is from Ruth:

You are probably aware that construction on the Main Street has begun in the first phase (Hertel - Amherst). The contractor needs to do some waterline relining between Humboldt and Leroy Ave. Beginning next week (possibly on Monday, April 28) they will begin digging a series of five holes (12' x 8') that will be plated every night.

When the work is done, they will backfill and asphalt the holes. They do not expect this to cause serious traffic delays or problems and assure the PCA that our water will not be shut off (except in an emergency, at which time neighbors would be alerted). S

There was a break-in at 54 Crescent while they were at work. The thieves entered through partially opened window and took a television. The alarm system was not on!

PCA: Children Thieves

And here's the last on crime in the Parkside Community. One of my neighbors from around the corner had his MP3 player stolen from his garage. He writes, "Last Wednesday, around 5:30 PM, a girl rode into my yard. She saw me on the deck and stopped and stated that she was looking for her puppy. I said that I'd keep an eye out and she left. I went back to my project the garage. I could have sworn that I brought my MP3 player down already, but thought no more about it. The next day, after searching for the player, I thought about the girl. I reveiwed the video and found that she was already in the yard once before I saw her ride in. She went right to the audio system and quickly rode out. On Friday afternoon, [another neighbor] saw her and two others ride into my yard once AGAIN!!! Confronting them , they were ALL looking for a puppy! This time though, it was a pitbull, unlike the beagle on wednesday! I called the police but they were long gone south on Summit. The cop got here 20 minutes later."

PCA: Copper Thieves Caught!

The following message circulated on 7/14/2007 about "The Elusive Parkside Copper Thieves", "Great news to report! This morning, 7/14 my husband and I heard a series of loud noises outside coming from the church on Beard and Wesley. From our window we could see two individuals putting copper gutters into a small silver Chevy Cavalier. We called 911 and they took off toward Starin. The police called 5 minutes later and said that they caught them, it was a white male, white female and a black male. All three of them were arrested."

This really is great news! I know all of us on our block were wondering how long it would take to catch people stealing copper from around the neighborhood.

PCA: Gargage Break-in and Stolen Bike Crime Alert

Message from the Parkside Community Association, "On Wednesday, August 8 in the early morning, some people entered the gated yard of a house on Summit Ave, stole their hammock, broke down their garage door and stole 2 adult mountain bikes. The homeowners have filed a police report.

The police came by and said they would try to do more patrolling as there have been a rash of burglaries in Parkside. Neighbors should report ALL suspicious activities and persons to the police by calling 911 or D District at 716-851-4413.

The Church of the Good Shepherd's sexton had a bike stolen a few weeks ago, also."

Message from the Parkside Community Association on Wednesday, 7/11/2007, "The garage at 140 Crescent was broken into Monday night, 7/9/2007. The door was kicked in and a chain saw and bike were stolen. The police were notified. The bike is an old three speed, burgandy, with an LL Bean insignia or sticker on it. If you see someone on a bike fitting this desciption call 911."

PCA: Strange fellow wander the streets and snooping in backyards

So, one of my neighbors got a picture of the guy who they think has been stealing stuff from around the neighborhood. Apparently he has been seen in people's backyards and then asking people if they have scrap metal.

Just call 911 if you see him--can't be good news. His picture has been sent to the police department.

PCA: Copper Thieves Crime Alert

Message from the Parkside Community Association, "I learned this is the plate number of the red SUV that has been stealing copper gutters in the Parkside neighborhood: NY plate DSM 3955. (NYS plate number)

There are 3 caucasian males: one drives and is a look out while the other two inspect homeowners' yards and houses for copper. When approached, the driver beeps the horn as a signal for the other two to leave the area.

This was reported to Chief Salas of D-District by a resident.

Also, there was a break-in at 95 Beard Ave. on Sunday night, March 18th between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m. Fortunately, they are remodeling and are not living in the house and there was not much to steal. The perps entered the house by breaking a window and using a ladder. Apparently the police were notified of the break in by a silent alarm. It is a good practice to tell a neighbor and notify the police if you are going to be out of town."
